There is no way Derek Chauvin got a fair trial.  Not saying the verdict was wrong, even though it was, because that is a separate matter.  But Chauvin did not get a fair trial.  Because it was so unfair, my prediction is that his conviction will be overturned on appeal and he will be retried.  He will eventually get off after he goes broke and his life is ruined.  I believe he should get off because I don't believe he was in the act of committing a felony when Floyd died.  Chauvin was within the limits of his training and scope of force while - ALL the while - he had his knee on Floyd.  And if he was "just doing his job", then he could not be guilty of murder.  I think what he did was horrendous, but I don't think it was illegal.  Cops get to do things other people cannot do.  They are allowed to be the aggressor because they deal with aggressive people.  There are laws that specifically exempt cops from laws the rest of us are expected to obey.  You and I are not allowed ever to be the aggressor.  Perhaps this is why cops are almost always acquitted when they are charged with crimes.  Cops are allowed to do - in fact they are required to do things that would be crimes if anyone else did them.  And if you or I or any other non-LEO did to Floyd what Chauvin did to Floyd, we would be absolutely guilty under the law.  But I don't think Chauvin is guilty under the law because Chauvin is a cop.

Most of my opinion as to Chauvin's guilt is based on the very lengthy article linked here:  https://lawofselfdefense.com/chauvin-trial-verdict-prediction-of-sorts-with-reasons/
This attorney states the legalities far more clearly than I can.

Before you jump on me, let me say this:  I don't believe Chauvin broke any laws, but I believe Chauvin was guilty as hell.  There ought to be a law to charge Chauvin with that he was in fact guilty of breaking.  The problem is that there are no laws about what Chauvin - as a cop - did to George Floyd.

THIS IS THE REAL PROBLEM, and it is being over-looked.  We so busy knotting up hangman's nooses to deliver "justice" that we aren't even addressing the real problem.  What we need are laws that apply to how cops can behave IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR DUTIES.  This is where the limits need to be applied and they will only apply to LEO's.  These would be complex and intricate laws, and they'd have to be made by people who understand law enforcement, who understand violence, who understand how much or how little force it really takes to physically control another person.  And until we have these laws that specifically apply to cops and address the situations that cops find themselves in, we will never ever be able to police the police.  The laws we have just don't apply to them.

But instead of passing laws that will address the police directly, we are turning the US Criminal Justice system into nothing more than an organized lynch mob.  I wouldn't want one of my kids, or one of my neighbors, or one of my friends to be tried under the conditions that Chauvin was tried under.  And you don't want one of your kids tried that way either.  Getting a fair trial in this country is what is really at stake here.  Because the trial that the worst among us gets is the trial we should all expect when our turn comes.  Everybody should be the same when it comes to due process of law.  I wouldn't wish Derek Chauvin's trial on anyone.
